About this drive
Built by Nicolae Ceaușescu in the 1970s as a military road through the Carpathian Mountains, the Transfăgărășan is now Romania's most famous and dramatic driving road. Climbing to 2,042 metres through tunnels, viaducts, and dizzying switchbacks, it traverses the Fagaras Mountains and passes the stunning Balea Lake at the top. The 90-kilometre route through pristine alpine scenery is open only in summer and offers a truly once-in-a-lifetime driving experience.
